Methodism

In 1729 a group of students at Oxford met together for Bible study and other activities. Because they had agreed to "live by rule" they were called Methodists. In 1739 the first chapel was built in Bristol and Methodism spread with itinerant preachers led by John Wesley singing hymns written by his brother Charles. There followed several splits in the Methodist Church but in 1907 they were re-united in The United Methodist Church, then in 1932 the Methodist Church of Great Britain was formed.
